Introduction To Wordpress

I keep mentioning WordPress as being the blogging platform of choice. But why do I say that? And why WordPress.org, instead of WordPress.com? What’s the difference?

Simply put, a WordPress.org blog is the most versatile platform there is. Your blog can look and function like a blog, or it can look and feel like a website. You can optimize your blog entries and pages to be search-engine friendly — important for rankings. You could spend days looking at just thre free plugins that are available!

There are also hundreds, if not thousands, of free themes — so you can change your blog’s look and feel at a moment’s notice.

However, there is a catch; if you’re new to WordPress, it can be bit on the intimidating side (to say the least).

Introduction to WordPress

There are a couple of things you can do to get used to the WordPress.org blogging platform, and the very first thing is to…sign up for a free WordPress.com blog! The reason is that the interface (the dashboard, the way you create and edit posts, etc.) is basically the same. So, you can fiddle around to your heart’s content, without worrying if what you’re trying to change will crash your blog.

Next, buy a copy of the book “WordPress for Dummies” by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. Lisa does a wonderful job of taking you through WordPress, and explaining all the screens and fields. You can get a copy at the library, your local bookstore, or online at Amazon.

Then comes the step that takes a little courage; with your new information, sign up for web hosting and set up your blog!

The nice thing is that your actual setup only needs to be done once per blog. Once everything is in place, you won’t need to fiddle with it anymore — unless of course you want to!

The Great Blogging Experiment

Sorry, I mentioned that I would be posting the names of some of the blogs David and I created in our blogging experiment using WordPress Goldmine this past weekend. To tell the truth, I was glued to the TV watching Hurricane Gustav’s progress through the Caribbean and on into Louisianna.

At any rate, here are a few of the blogs that David and I have created and tested:

So, in two weeks with three of these blogs, we made more income than I have in 2 or 3 months with some of my big websites! Now I consider that a success!

Naturally, we’ve started some more blogs as well, and I’ll be keeping you posted on how they do as well.

So, whatcha waitin’ for? Get blogging!

Maximizing Your Hosted Blog: What to Look For in a Host

I’ve already mentioned that if you truly want traffic, hosting your blog is the way to go.  This means signing up for web hosting, and placing your blog there.  No, it’s not free — I think it costs me something like $9 a month.  But for that $9 a month, I can have up to 100 blogs!  And believe me, with David’s and my “great blogging experiment”, I think we’ve set up about 10 between the two of us in the last 2 weeks.   (More on the experiment can be found below today’s guest blogger’s article.)

Today, I’d like to introduce Matt Hedges, who is talking about maximizing your hosted blog.  It’s really easier than you think, and he brings up some good ideas.  Matt’s article is a nice summary of information.

Maximizing Your Hosted Blog

A blog is an easy way to publish web content. Although originally for posting online “diary” journals, blogging has helped companies make money.  In some cases, lots of it!

If interested in traffic, you need to host your blog with a web hosting company.  And that blog needs to be maintained.  Where you decide to host may be the difference between a great experience and one that’s frustrating.

It is pretty easy to get a cheap hosting site for your blog. Many people generally ask whether it is alright to go for a cheap host but get good results. The low cost may be of interest to some but quality of serive is actually the most important.  After all, cheap web hosting doesn not do you any good if your blog is down as often as it’s up!

Low Cost Versus More Expensive Web Hosting

It becomes extremely important for you to know of affordable web hosting services, who also offer excellent service.  And aside from uptime (the most important feature of a good web host) is ease of setting up your blog.  And this is especially important if you have little technical saavy when it comes to web hosting!

You should know what tools you need, when considering web hosts. There are a large range of prices available and the rising popularity of the internet means this is likely to rise further.  In general, though, you should be able to find a reliable web host with a variety of services for under $10 a month.

There are certain features which play a crucial role in making your blog a big success. One of the biggest is the database that drives a blog’s engine (so to speak). The database will be created in your Control Panel area called “MySQL”. If you select a major web host, then MySQL 4 is the minimum version to consider.

If you plan to host multiple blogs, you need to know how many MySQL databases you can run.  Most hosts will give you at least 5 databases, which translates to 5 blogs.  Fine if you want just one or maybe a few more.  Terrible if you plan to host lots of blogs.

You need to ensure people can get onto your site when they choose. If your server is slow, this is a terrible situation.  Web users have a low level of patience and if they are unable to get to your site quickly, they will go elsewhere. This will reduce the number of visitors you receive.

Another consideration is how much web space you receive to host your files, as well as the bandwidth you can use.  Web space (basically hard drive space) is critical if you plan to use a lot of photos, plan some podcasts or even video.  Audio and video can eat up space — fast!

Bandwidth can be though of in terms of a water well.  If you have small pipes running from the well to your house, it will take a lot longer to fill that bathtub compared to if you had larger pipes!  So a small bandwidth ultimately means slower service if you have a large blog, or one with lots of pictures, audio files and/or videos files.

Good, inexpensive hosting can be had.  But you need to know what to look for:  uptime reliability, number of MySQL connections, Automated blog setup, adequate web space and bandwidth.  Regular backups are also important; being able to schedule them yourself or even perform them yourself when you want through a control panel is a plus.

Author Matt Hedges:  Republished with permission from WebHostingMadness.com, a provider of hosting company ratings, comparisons and detailed articles about the web hosting industry.

Thanks Matt, for that good information.  Finding a reliable web host that makes it easy for you to maintain your blog for a reasonable fee is important.  If you’re curious to know, David and I use Bluehost for our blogs; the  cost is reasonable and installing a Wordpress blog from scratch takes maybe 20 second (it’s automated for you).  I’ve used a lot of hosts in my day, and I’ve found Bluehost to be great for blogging.

And speaking of blogging, here’s more on our experiment.

Update on the Blogging Experiment

I had something exciting happen the other day.  I’ve been a little preoccupied with tropical storm Fay lately (we live in Florida) or I would have posted this then.

I’ve had a blog up for 2 weeks as of today, and already it’s brought in more money than any of my websites has brought in within the first 4 or 5 months of their lives!  I’m both excited and thrilled to be earning the dollars quickly.

The other blogs (with the exception of one that I didn’t investigate enough beforehand; live and learn) have been getting a steady flow of traffic and plenty of clicks for our affiliate sales.

OK, the cat is our of the bag for our success so far; we use the WordPress Goldmine method for building these little blogs.  I cannot recommend it highly enough!

By Labor Day, I’ll be releasing the names of the oldest of these blogs, so you can see what they’re like, and what we’ve done.

As always, stay tuned for more information!

How to Identify Your Niche Market When Blogging, Part 2

This is part 2 of how to identify your niche market when blogging.  Here’s part 1 of the post.

We left off with our term “harley davidson megamotor harness boots”.  We looked at the phrase (in quotes) in Google and found that there were only six listings.  Now we want to think about this for a second.  In quotes, it’s a cinch you will be on the page 1 of the Google listings.  But what about the flip side?

You’ve got the demand, you should be able to reach page 1 of Google.  But is there anyone selling these boots that has an affiliate program?  I took a quick look and didn’t really see any.  So if you planned to monetize your blog by selling boots as an affiliate, this phrase doesn’t seem to work.

Another Example to Identify Your Niche Market

OK, now you’ve seen that for a successful blog (for traffic and monetization) you need:

  • Niched-down (long tail) keyword phrase.
  • Sufficient demand.
  • Able to be monetized.

Let’s take another example.  I’ll use acne as an example.  I happen to know there are a couple of good Clickbank ebooks that I could sell as an affiliate.  Now I need to know a decent keyword phrase to use!

Over to the free version of WordTracker, and put in acne.  It’s a bit of a tough one, because it’s such a hot topic, but the phrase “acne blackheads natural treatment” merits a closer look.  Sure, at 5,020 supply it’s over the numbers I usually use, but I want to see how strong the competition is.  In other words, are there 5,020 pages that I could blow past, or are there a lot of well-optimized pages already?

Still in Google, type the following into the Google search bar exactly as I have it shown:

allintitle: “acne blackheads natural treatment”

This returns us 154 listings.  What does this mean?  Why should you care?

This particular search tells me how many pages are optimized, with the phrase “acne blackheads natural treatment” in the page title.  Now I really look at the results; these are the people and pages who have at least marginally optimized their pages.  Can I do better by optimizing the title, the links and the URL?

Which leads me to a quick talk about optimizing your blog.

Optimizing Your Blog

Yes, I’ve told you how you can get a free blog on blogger, wordpress.com and some other services.  But I also have to say that none of them optimize your posts very well.  And when you’re up against other blogs and websites that are optimized…you may be fighting a losing battle if other blogs are optimizing.

I know it’s kind of scary, but if you honest-to-goodness want to optimize your blog for the best possible search engine inclusion, you need to use the self-hosted version of WordPress (wordpress.org).  I’ll talk about this more in another post, but it’s something for you to think about now.

Blog Experiment Update

Yep, more entries for David’s and my great blogging experiments.  David has had a really cool success.  He created a 2-post, 1-page blog for a niche he found.  I think he made his posts yesterday (Sunday, August 17th) and today…he’s right up at the top of Google today and is getting lots of traffic!

I made a post to one of my blogs a little while ago (one of the ones in this experiment) and went to make dinner.  After dinner, I sat down in front of the computer and checked — I was already listed in Google, page 1 (with quotes)!!!  I’m #21 without quotes.  But that was in a space of about 45 minutes!

So, I am still a firm believer in this truly exciting blogging tool — it’s awesome!

How to Identify Your Niche Market When Blogging

Here’s the next post on how to identify your niche market before you start your blog (or even afterwards). I started to talk about this in my previous post on how to make money blogging with the right keywords, but now let’s talk some more.

Choosing a Niche

This is probably the most important step; choosing your niche.  There are two main considerations here.

First, do you care about search engine traffic, or do you just want to express yourself?  If you’re writing a blog because you are passionate about a subject, but it doesn’t matter how many or few people read it, then write about it.  Don’t worry about choosing a niche; your subject will take care of itself.

On the other hand, if you do want search engine traffic, you need to be a little more careful in choosing your niche.  And that brings up two points.  Do you want people to read what you have to say, but don’t care about monetizing your blog…or do you want it to earn a regular (even if small) income?

If you’re wanting search engine traffic but don’t care about monetizing, choose the method I described in my last post.  Find words in the free WordTracker tool, then check the two supply numbers in Google.  As a very general rule, keep your in quotes keyword under 1,000.  Now you can go over this at times, but I wouldn’t normally look higher than 2,000 — just too hard to climb to the top of the heap (i.e., page 1 of the Google search results).

How to Identify Your Niche Market to Monetize

Most people wouldn’t mind making a bit of money from their blog, and some want it to earn a regular income.  Indeed, some want it to replace their current income!  Here are some tips for this for you, if it’s your ultimate goal.

Pick your niche carefully.  For example, maybe I wanted to be an affiliate for shoe sales.  Well, “shoes” is a mightly big topic.  So I’ll winnow it down some.  Do I want men’s shoes?  Women’s shoes?  Boots?  a specific brand?  Well, how about boots?

Put the word bootsinto WordTracker and see what comes up.  Hmmm, it’s a really big list, but maybe harley davidson boots?  Click on that, because we want to winnow it down even further.

As a very general rule, we want more words in the keyword phrase; less likely to find other pages that have all these words.  The phrase “harley davidson boots” (in quotes) turns up 157,000 for a supply — far too much.  Keep looking…

Whoa, here’s a term — “harley davidson megamotor harness boots”  In quotes that has a supply of just 6!  Now that could be a winner!  Especially because people searching on that term know exactly what they want, and are far more likely to have a credit card in hand (so to speak) before they get to your blog!

This post has gotten a bit longer than I wanted, so I’ll continue this topic of how to identify your niche market when blogging on the next post.  See you then!

How to Make Money Blogging with the Right Keywords

How to make money blogging with the right keywords is what I’m going to discuss right now, and it goes hand-in-hand with the blogging experiments Dave and I have been running.

Choosing the Right Keywords

First, for you to have a decent chance of success, you need to select keywords that have demand, but very little competition.  We’ll use this post as an example.  There isn’t a ton of demand for this keyword phrase, but there is also very little supply.  So the chances for me getting to the top of the search quickly are pretty decent.

Now, that’s the example for just this post — what about an entire blog?  I mean, this particular phrase “how to make money blogging with the right keywords” certainly isn’t worth a blog in its own right.  But it makes for a great post!

Supply Versus Supply

If you do a search in Google using the keyword phrase in this post’s title (without quotes) you’ll see 2,680,000 records returned.  OK, put the quotes around the phrase and the number goes down to 326.  Quite a difference, right?  So one supply figure is wildly different from the other.

You want the keyword phrase in quotes to be as low as possible.  I try to keep it under 1,000.  I’m even happier when I can get it under 500.  And I’m ecstatic when it’s under 100.

So know your supply numbers!

How to Make Money Blogging With the Right Keywords - Update

This is still the grand blogging experiment that you can read about in the previous post.  I have an update from this morning.

David and I decided to play hookey today and spend some time away from the computers, so we went to lunch, took a long leisurely drive, then grabbed a smoothie for dinner.  We came back home and I checked my newest blog.  Yay!  The traffic has started coming in.  Then I decided to check my standings in Google by typing my keyword phrase into the Google search bar, with and without quotes.

With quotes, I came up in the #1 and #3 spots!  And even more exciting, without quotes I was in the #4 spot (I was at like 9 or 10 this morning)!  This, mind you, for a blog that was just born a couple days ago!

How did I manage this?  One, it was by checking both supply figures and making sure the search with the keyword in quotes was as low as possible.  Two, it’s making sure the demand for the keyword is worth the effort — if the number of searches is too small, it’s not worth (to me) making a blog on.  For my keyword tool, I use the free version of WordTracker.  The numbers you see in this tool are the number of searches on a daily basis.

Normally for a single-product blog (if I have a specific product for sale as an affiliate), I want to have a keyword with at least 1,000 unique visitors a month.  That’s roughly 33 people a day.  If it was for an informational website where I was featuring Adsense instead of an affiliate product, I’d want that number much higher — at least 5,000 people a month.

The other way I managed it was with the exciting blogging tool I found last week.  Keep in mind that I’ve been writing online for several years (mainly full-blown websites), but I have never, ever had this kind of search engine success before!

I’ll keep you posted as to how the blogs do.  Meanwhile, go out an check the free version of Wordtracker and run some phrases through, see what kind of demand shows up.  Then pick some keyword phrases from the list WordTracker returns and drop them into Google search, both with quotes (how to make money blogging with the right keywords) and without quotes (how to make money blogging with the right keywords) and see what kinds of numbers you come up with.

There’s another tool you can use once you’re familiar with the way WordTracker works.  Unfortunately it’s something that costs money (although it’s pretty inexpensive), so that’s why I recommend the free version of WordTracker for now.  Get used to doing those searches, and being aware of what the numbers mean.

Make a Blog and Make it Fun!

Make a blog, and make it fun!  I’ve been concentrating so much on the money-making aspect that I’ve kind of ignored the other huge aspect: how to make a blog and have fun doing it!

Good morning all, it’s Gail again with a blog update and a guest author, Russell Stewart, telling us a little bit more about the overall aspect of blogging.  Sorry I’ve been kind of glossing it over, because if you don’t enjoy it, blogging will be an awful lot like work!

And after Russell gives us some insight on how to make a blog fun, I’ll give you an update on the latest of my blogging experiences, in the section called “Gail’s Blog Update” and it’s also exciting!

But in the meanwhile, please welcome Russell.

Make a Blog and Make it Fun

Blogging is an art of enjoyment, and web logging has reached phenomenal heights because of that aspect.

Even in the pretty recent past, creating websites was considered to be ‘geeks-and-professionals-only’ territory. However, it’s been streamlined so very much that a couple of simple click will get the job done.  Anyone and everyone can do it!  It’s now child’s play to make a blog.

With blogging came an onslaught of new opportunities for both business and pure enjoyment.  Interactivity, social networking and communication swept the internet.  And whoa! the introduction of RSS feeds contribute further to this, making it even easier to get the information you want.

Blogging is now also a way to make money,  You can do it via AdSense, affiliate marketing and actual products. Right now, most businesses maintain blogs to promote their specific industry and get visitors to their sites.

If you really want to express your thoughts freely, you should get a blog!  It’s something that anyone can do. It’s easy to choose a topic for your blog when you know what you want to say. Some blogs are open-ended, with just about any topic discussed among the writers and readers.  These can be considered “anything goes” and they can be quite fun to read.

Some would rather maintain specialized blogs. These blogs have posts relating to a single topic and this topic can be anything such as business, travel, computers, advertising etc. Such blogs are interesting only to those who are specifically looking for information on that field.

There are blogs which allow guest authors to contribute interesting write-ups (like the one you’re reading right now). General readers are also enticed to participate in blogging, to make it more lively and conversational.

Whether you write for money or for fun, whether you are a high-risk entrepreneur or stay-at-home mom, regardless of whether you do it a few hours a week or many hours a day - blogging is fun!  It’s the next generation in community involvement.

About the Author:
If you are looking for strange stories then take a look at this great site. packed with weird stuff from around the world, this blog will certainly entertain. Great reading when you are looking for something to make you smile and shows the lighter side of living.

Gail’s Blog Update

OK, I have an update on Dave’s and my great blog experiment (read more about it here and here).  I mentioned that we had some new blogs we were trying out and here’s the latest!

(By the way, if you’re wondering why I’m not mentioning the exact URLs of these blogs, it’s because I don’t want to artificially inflate the results by having people click from this site.  Never fear, when the blogs get to be three weeks old, I’ll release their names.)

OK, I created a blog on Tuesday, in an area I know less than nothing about.  But the numbers looked good, and I used the exciting blogging tool to get the information to the blog.  And I was bogged down yesterday morning when one of the steps ran into a problem (a free site I needed to spend 10 seconds on was down).  Anyway, the site was operational yesterday around lunch.

Today…drum roll…my brand new blog is sitting at spots number 2 and 3 in Google!!!!  Now that’s the keyword with the quotes, but even without the quotes I am still on page 1 of Google!  I’m writing this at about 9:30 AM, so it’s been less than 24 hours for me to reach Google page 1.

David’s blog that he did this weekend is still going very strong, spot number 1 in Google with the quotes, as well as spot number 10!  Without the quotes, he’s number 2.

And to make things even more exciting, the final two steps are underway for these three sites (my original, my new and Dave’s).  They take a little more time, but they should explode the blogs even more.

Talk about make a blog and make it fun!  It’s fun and exciting to see all this happen.  And it’s all due to this exciting blogging tool that we discovered.

Onward!  More blogs!

Essential Characteristics You Need When You Work From Home

Our guest author Mr. Sean Hagon has put it to words just what is happening in this country. The work from home industry has just exploded and is growing faster every day.

There is tremendous growth and excitement occurring right now for people who are looking to become a wealthy marketer and work from home. So why is there such a surge in this industry?

We hear it in the news everyday about corporate layoffs, foreclosures, companies shutting down, rising gas prices, etc. Unfortunately, people are feeling insecure with their jobs more than ever. There are many occupations on thin ice with employees having no idea where the path may lead in the end with such a failing economy. Many are concerned and are now looking to take control of their own lives and especially their futures. This is the motivating force behind the tremendous growth in the work from home industry.

Most recently, an economist predicted that in the next 10 years, the two occupations where millionaires will be born are in network marketing/work from home and the wellness industry. This growth will result in many households producing a net worth reaching the seven-digit mark. Much of this will be achieved through the Internet and the plethora of opportunities it offers. There are many families and individuals enjoying the rewards and benefits of this work from home industry as a result. Furthermore, it is changing their lives for the better where they will never have to be concerned with corporate lay offs, rising gas prices (even if they fall, they will rise again) foreclosures and more.

Many are still missing out on this tremendous growth in the work from home industry. This is not due to the lack of effort or desire. It is occurring because many have the mindset that they are only capable of what their minds believe they can accomplish.

The work from home industry has an almost uncountable number of opportunities to choose from utilizing the internet. This includes most MLM businesses which take long periods of time (months and even years) to sufficiently develop a network that enables a person to make a significant income. This is due to what we call in the industry the 1-up and 2-up businesses. These types of work from home businesses require you to pass up your first few sales to your sponsor before you are qualified to earn an income in addition to the initial start up cost to even join.

The start up costs in the work from home industry can run anywhere from $100 to thousands of dollars. I’ve seen costs as high as $20,000. You also need to be knowledgeable in marketing your business with your work from home opportunity. This knowledge is required in order for you to be successful. Most never acquire this knowledge correctly, are unwilling to learn and eventually give up. Then, in turn blame the industry. In addition, by spending more money on generating leads to get people interested in your business, you compound the problem before you even get started.

There are some important characteristics to keep in mind when choosing a work from home business. The principal is not based on if they want to start a work from home business but which one they should choose. Here are some essential characteristics to follow:
