How to Make Money Using the Internet as a Store

A couple of summers back I was doing some keyword research online (I was looking to create my first reliable stream of internet income) and I came across a keyword that met all requirements. The only strange thing was that I’d never heard of the product before discovering it online. The product was called a hitch cover, and it had something to do with trailers hitches.

I had no idea, but a couple of quick Google searches told me it was a product people bought to decorate their trailer hitch while also keeping dirt and grime out of their hitch. Now, I was intent on making some money using the internet so I didn’t care whether I knew what the product was; I just wanted to know if it would be profitable.

And how did I go about deciding whether it would be profitable or not? Well, first of all I needed to know if enough people were searching for it each month. The tool I was using told me that several thousand people per month were searching for the product and its derivative keyword, so it passed that test.

Once I knew that the traffic would be there I had to know how strong the competing web stores were going to be. I did a search for my term on Google and I saw that the top-ranking websites wouldn’t be terribly difficult to pass. I began to think I had a high potential product on my hands.

There was one more thing I needed to find out. I knew I could get the traffic, but I needed to know if there would be any profit in the product. I went searching for a supplier who would a) sell me the product at a price that would leave me room for a nice profit, and b) dropship the product to my customers so I wouldn’t have to deal with stocking inventory.

Good fortune was on my side – I found a supplier whose price would guarantee me a profit margin of $10 per sale, and they were willing to send the products directly to customers. I had found a winning keyword; all that was left was to build a quality website and go after the traffic that would make me some great money.
