The Google keyword search tool is actually part of the AdWords setup. It was originally designed to help advertisers choose keywords for their AdWords campaigns. But it’s blossomed to assist bloggers and website builders in finding niche keywords. To research all the information you need takes hours to glean out the stats you need for your niche.
Before you go off any explore this keyword tool estimator, you need to know what three things mean. They have to do with the match type, and they are:
- Broad: For the keyword women’s red shoes, you’ll get keywords with women’s, red and shoes in them, but not necessarily having to do with your topic. This is great when you’re searching for a niche, but not very good if you’ve already decided upon a marketing niche.
- Phrase: Using women’s red shoes again, you’ll find keywords that have all three words, but not necessarily in that order. You’ll also get other words included; for example women’s red sports shoes. I use phrase the most if I have two or three words in my keyword phrase.
- Exact: This will return only the numbers for the keyword phrase women’s red shoes. Only useful if you’re looking up one keyword in particular.
These are the kinds of matching you’ll see with the Google AdWord keyword tool. Now on to the numbers.
Google Keyword Search Tool
The numbers for the Google keyword search tool are based on monthly figures. You’ll have last month’s searches and then the monthly average over the course of the past 12 months.
I personally like to use the 12-month average numbers, because traffic isn’t necessarily even throughout the year. For example, in September and October, you’ll have a ton of searches for Halloween items, which falls off dramatically come November. So unless I am targeting a seasonal niche, I like the traffic to be fairly even throughout the year.
The column for Advertiser Competition is useful if you’re trying to decide if you should use AdSense for monetization. When you have a lot of advertiser competition, you have a lot of potential ads. And also the possibility of higher bids for those ads!
