Hi! My name is David Nettles, and I am the person behind this website. I work from my home full-time, and here’s a little of my background.
I’m in my 50’s and live in South Florida with my wife Gail and three children. That is, if you count four-footed fuzzballs as children (they are cats). I’ve lived in South Florida almost all my life, and have seen it grow and change over the years. Much of it for the good, but it’s getting awfully crowded now!
As far as my business background goes, I’ve had one kind of job or another all my life, from paperboy to the military to corporate America. And while each was fulfilling in it’s own way and time, I wanted something more.
I wanted to be my own boss. And for awhile in the 1980’s, I actually owned a TV repair shop of my own some local people still remember Northlake TV in North Palm Beach. Finally, my own boss! I worked it for several years, until TV’s started being thrown out instead of being repaired. As the business grew less and less, my only choice at the time was to sell out while it still had value.
What Could I Do?
I’ve actually tried building a few home-based businesses in the past, mostly with dismal results. Yes, I did try Amway, as well as a few other MLMs in my time. Sometimes I made a little, but mostly I lost money.
Anyway, I kept thinking that there had to be a better way. Somehow. Owning the TV repair shop had been nice, but there was a lot of overhead. The rent, utilities and employees had to be paid, even if I was too sick to work. A brick-and-mortar business took too much money to run, and I still couldn’t work my own hours!
My wife designs and builds websites, and has an E-bay business, too. But neither of those businesses really appealed to me. After all, I didn’t want to leave an 8-to-5 job and end up hating what I was doing at home. What would be the point in that? So I kept searching.
Can You Spell L-A-Y-O-F-F?
The company I worked for in my 8-to-5 job was having several rounds of layoffs (”downsizing”). They moved my project to Europe knew it would only be a matter of time before my department would be outsourced to overseas and I would be out of a job so I got serious about finding something I would be happy doing.
With my skills, there is little for me where I live. I’d either have to double my commute (which was already an hour each way), move to another part of the country or take a serious cut in pay for a job in some other field.
I knew that I had to find something quickly so that when I did get downsized, I wouldn’t be scrambling to find something.
What I Do Now, From Home
I started with another networking company in 2006, thinking I might be able to build it before the next round of layoffs. I worked this new business in fits and starts until January of 2007, when I finally got serious about it.
And when I got serious, treating it like a business, that is when I started making the money.
September 2007 was a milestone — yep, I finally got downsized, along with my whole department. Most of my co-workers were scrambling to find another position, but I made the decision to work my business full-time.
I haven’t regretted it for a moment, even if it was a scary at first. Now I make my own hours, set my own schedule. Sure, I work a lot — over 40 hours a week — but they are hours that I choose and besides, I truly enjoy my business. It’s not like work at all!
