You can even use blogging as an integral part of your internet marketing activities where you have the power to earn great money online. As part of your money-making activities, you can choose to write articles that talk about your business.

To start blogging for money, here are five (5) easy to follow steps:

1. In choosing your topic, it is important to consider your interests as it is easier to write stuff that you are interested about.

2. This will all depend on your purpose and your resources as well.

However, if you decide to go all out with your blogging for money, it will be more advantageous on your purpose to use the paid blog service.

3. This is where you will need to write relevant articles on a regular basis and post the same to your blog. To save time in finding the right keywords to use, you can get the keyword research tool online.

You also want to keep your target audience in mind when writing your content.

4. Especially if you are blogging for money, it is necessary that you drive volumes of traffic to your blog. You have to go to your targeted traffic if you really want to make money online. You also have to make sure that you earn quality links as this will determine your popularity on the net that can attract huge volumes of traffic for your blog.

5. Your efforts in providing your target traffic quality and relevant content and your investment in driving volumes of traffic to your site will pay off big time when you start to monetize from your blog.

Either way, you definitely earn not just easy but great money online from your blogging for money.

To keep visitors coming to your blog you have to keep writing content. Find and relate with bloggers especially in related niche through social medias and blog commenting. People who love your content would willingly link to it. And your traffic will increase naturally.

Never try to build a successful website without marketing the right way. Marketing a website largely depends on how many votes that one gets in the form of unique back links.

Before I do anything else I'm going to go over a great technique that I used to build an almost endless amount of links to my website. Every week I go to specific news websites and submit tons of different stories. The stories are actually what is getting me my inbound back links.

Next what I typically do is I go to some of my most trusted press release companies. What they do for me is a syndicate my content and links out to a wide variety of places. In turn I not only received back links and increase search engine rankings, but I receive a great deal of media attention.

Next you want to really look into ramping up your link building strategy with paid link building services. What this can do is allow you to virtually put your website on autopilot after you have built up a substantial number of unique links on your own.

This type of thinking can determine whether or not your site dies in a few years or continues to thrive long after you have worked on. You must remember that Google and other major search engines rank your site based on how many links it has gotten recently as well as all time.

This however is not the only thing that you must do in order to keep your website alive and running after you have built a good number of base links. I recommend purchasing a product called content 2.0 that will substantially help you add content to your site without you having to do anything.

Every person that has made a living online knows that when it comes to putting things on autopilot your visitors must do their part. However, they will never do their part if they are aware that they are making you money. That is why you have to essentially tricked them into participating.

One thing that cannot be overlooked is the amount of money that is to be had in this type of market. If you are able to learn how to build websites effectively and use your knowledge for income then your success and potential sky's the limit. I am not going to blow smoke up you know what in order to get you on board with this type of thinking even though I am sure it is right for you.

In the meantime I have had so many pages built for me and it has not cost me a single dime. The truth of the matter is some of the pages of my visitors a bill for me have write better than some of the pages I built myself. Why do you not understand this I'm certainly not complaining about the new found income.

Using blogs as marketing tools has taken the world by storm. It is something that most everyone is doing and using to make an income. There are some that are even six figure bloggers. How do you become a six figure blog marketer?

If you are beginner blogger, then there are some things that you will need to know. The simplest thing that you can do is to start one, and just journal in it for a while. This will allow you to learn just what it takes and what it is all about to keep up a blog. When you are just journaling your thoughts and what is on your mind, you have nothing to lose and nothing to gain.

Six figure blog marketing is more than likely not done with one single blog. It would take many many blogs to create a six figure income, and if you have the funds and the resources, it could be done. The first thing that you would need to do is find out the markets that are low in competition but are high in the search engine rankings. Doing so will give you a great idea of what you should be marketing in your blog and what you should stay away from.

Finding a niche market that is barely touched in the world of internet marketing is the best thing to do. However, you then have to decide if the niche markets that you have discovered are ones that you are interested in. Some start out with things that they know and get great results, whether they are niche markets or not.

While good content is something that you will need for your blog, you also want to ensure that it is original content as well. You can market a blog with something that is copied and that you do not own the rights. Plagiarism will get you in trouble with Google as well as the person that originally wrote the content. Be sure that all of your posts are ones that only you own the rights too. This is a great thing to know and do when you are marketing your blog.

Just be sure that you hire those that you can trust and have a great reputation for getting work done on time and accurately. You will not want your workers to put you behind schedule.

While you are planning to outsource some of your work to others, you may want to decide and get an outline of just what is needed and the priority. Perhaps you need someone to set up your many blogs, or maybe you need someone else to write the content for the blogs. You can easily find experts on particular markets that you are wanting to blog about and pay them for the rights to their articles. Then post them as needed on your blog.

Start by thinking about things that interest you and things that you like to do yourself. If at all possible, find something that you know all about all ready or can learn quickly to become an expert in that field.

Blog marketing is all about results. If you market long enough and hard enough, you are going to get the results that you want and are looking for. The keys to achieving this are patience and determination. Work hard and you will be rewarded.

For those who haven't noticed the awesome power of blogs, then you definitely are missing out on a pretty big piece of the pie. It's easier than you think getting started with blog marketing. This is especially true if you already have a little bit of blogging experience. You just need to learn some of the new things out there for the blogs and you can begin to earn extra money from home with your blog.

The first task is to make certain that you are pretty comfortable when using the blogging software. I personally am a huge fan of WordPress blogs. But there are several other types of blogging software onthe market. Pick one that you want and become comfortable with the platform. Get to know the techniques of posting and editing. Learn how you can customize your blog in order that it looks personalized. If you don't want to get too much into customization, you might do great with a free blog at Blogger.com or WordPress.com.

As soon as you are happy with the way that your blogging software works, you have to choose what market you will work in. This market will be called you 'niche'. Some types of niches are internet marketing or weight loss. Try to find a niche that does not have too much competition but remains to be popular. To achieve this, you might have to choose some more specific niches like 'wine coolers' or 'senior dating'. Many people believe that you need to select a niche that interests you, but I do believe that it makes more sense to find a niche that you think could be profitable.

You now have everything in line to start blog marketing. You just need to fill up your blog with intriguing posts that relate to your niche. So, if you choose the 'weight loss' niche, then you would want to fill your blog with lots of great details about losing weight. Write some posts about different diets and just how people can plan out their diets to meet their schedules. It will make your visitors want to read your content, since you are providing them with some good information. That's the whole point here, you want to get a lot of visitors to your new blog.

By this point, you should have a blog with some excellent information in it. Now, lets think of a few methods that you can start monetizing it. You can post pay per click ads on it and make money when people click on ads. You can also write reviews of affiliate products and propose that your readers purchase products through links on your posts. But, my favorite way to monetize a blog is to offer your readers a free gift in exchange for their e-mail address. Then, you can build a mailing list and market to them again and again.

You need to focus on getting as many people to your blog as you can. So read up somewhat about how precisely to make powerful blog posts and ways in which to optimize a blog for maximum visitors. Start blog marketing today and you should have everything rolling in under a week!

Want to make money blogging? Hundreds of thousands of people are doing exactly that, and you can too, provided you approach it in the right way.

I've been blogging for ten years. In the early years, blogs were a curiosity, and traffic flowed without effort. Nowadays, blogging is a challenge. Let's look at three vital secrets for success.

1. You must have the right content. Before you start your blog, work out who the audience will be, and what your audience wants to know. Be as precise as you can. Once you know who your audience is, you can choose a topic for your blog which will appeal to that audience.

This is a stumbling block for many people new to blogging for money. When you decide on a topic, conduct a quick search to make sure that people are actually looking for that information. If there's no demand for your topic, you'll have a hard time generating traffic to your blog. If this is the case, consider a different topic.

2. People need to be able to find your content. Say you've just put up your blog and you've added twelve posts. That's great, but you've just gotten started. Popular blogs can have hundreds, even thousands of posts, and the top blogs can have as many twenty or more posts in a single day.

Granted, this is a huge amount of content. If you're working alone, chances are you won't be able to compete when it comes to sheer volume. But, pay attention to what these top blogs are doing. They're posting at least once a day (or more), and you should plan on doing the same. The more content you have, the easier it will be for visitors to find your blog.

One of the first ways for people to find your content is through your RSS feed. In less than a week after starting your blog, your feed should be indexed. If you submit your blog's RSS feed to blog directories, you can get indexed even faster.

3. Your content must encourage feedback from your readers. When you've built a following of regular readers, you want real feedback, interaction, not just occasional comments. You want them to use your site for what it was designed for: clicking your ads, and buying your products and services.

If you keep these three points in mind: create the right content, make your content easy to find, and encourage interaction with your content, you'll be much more successful as you try to make money blogging.

Easy Methods To Profit From Your Blog With 3 Effortless Ways

Author: Rahul Vaidya

Once you have your blog ready to go, you probably want to find some other ways to monetize it with your main products or services.

A very effective way to use your blog to make "extra" cash is by writing product reviews. While reviews are a great way to convert visitors, it does take some time to write a good review.

In case you are not looking towards writing anymore than you already are but would still like to find some quick ways to make some money from your blog, then the three that I have listed below should do the trick for you.

1. Put an AdSense or other textual ad block on your sidebar or post. Putting an ad block like AdSense is very easy related to just a couple of lines of code. As I mentioned, AdSense is only some of the game in town. There are other textual ad services out there that operate like AdSense and even offer more flexibility.

2. Banner ads. Banners have evolved quite a bit since the era of the long flashing banner you would see along the top of a page. Now you will see smaller block banners and narrow banners going vertically rather than horizontally across the top. Quite a number of the top products you could become an affiliate for offer many different banner ads that you should use on your blog.

3. Text ads within your posts. You can include text links to products that are based on the posts that you make. When writing about a topic that includes the use of a products or services, you can include a link to a vendor within your post. These are very effective at conversions along with reviews.

Of course, if you actually don't want to hassle with setting up those but you still want your blog monetized, you can opt for a theme that will do it for you. There are WordPress themes that are specifically designed to place those links and ads on your blog for you.

Just do a search for WordPress themes or blog themes and layouts. Locate a theme that helps you build and place your ads in the blog.

To Make Money Online from blogging, it is not necessary to have a lot experience. Using the above mentioned 3 techniques can easily yield good earnings for your blog.

I just saw an article that just highlighted the need for an online business (profitable blogging, for one). It's about how workers are being forced to take unpaid days off during the year to save company money.

You can read the full article here.

But in essence, some companies and government entities are requiring employees to take unpaid leave as a way to help prevent layoffs.

What Does it Mean to You?

If you're in a situation where you need all your money to pay bills, taking unpaid time can really hurt. The article went on to say that people could find other means of adding money to the household.

One mentioned was turning a hobby into a business. The other was to create an online business. And of course a third would be to get a second job.

In general, creating an online business, powered by affiliate programs or online sales, tends to be the least expensive way to go. That is, assuming you don't overspend for web hosting or domain names. You can take online credit card payments via PayPal or Google Checkout for no up-front costs; you are charged only when you sell something.

And naturally, there's always eBay for selling things you don't need or no longer use. Just be aware that not all items are worth much money. Don't count on selling your old VHS video collection!

Start Now, Not Later

Now here's the catch. For the most part, aside from selling on eBay, it takes time to get your internet business up and getting targeted traffic. It does not happen overnight, and I want to emphasize that.

So by starting now, you're working towards having a second income (or even a primary income) should either a layoff occur or you are forced to take unpaid days.

Yes, it's extra work creating an online business with a profitable blog. Yes it's time that you could be spent relaxing or parked in front of the TV. But consider this:

If you're laid off, you'll have entirely too much free time and no income.

Aren’t a few hours now worth having another source of income should the unthinkable happen?

Are free blog sites good for when you want to make money blogging? The best answer to that question in most cases is no, but there are times when free blogging can be useful. Let's find out how.

Free Blog Sites

Free blogging is a situation where your blog is located on another company's or another person's blog server. You don't own your blog in the sense that the blog hosting company can pull the plug on your blog with no warning. While I've not had it happen, I know several people to whom it has; one person lost almost 100 sites when Google pulled the plug on blogger. Ouch!

Free blog sites are great for many reasons one of which is to learn how to blog, but if you are serious about profitable blogging, look elsewhere.

Now I will admit that I have a few free blogs at wordpress.com and Google's blogger platform. And although I've never made money off blogger, I have from wordpress.com. The bad news is that your monetization is limited on the free blog site, and you most likely will not be making near the money you would if it was your own site. So live and learn!

MySpace Blogs

Another of the popular free blogging sites is for MySpace blogs myspace.com that is. If you have a MySpace page, you can certainly use it for a free personal blog. The main use of a MySpace blog is to send traffic to your blog that makes money.

And naturally, the same applies to Facebook. The approach on Facebook is a little different it’s great for personal stuff. But when it comes to making money you must work from permission based marketing concept rather than a direct approach.

What Makes a Free Blogging Sites Useful?

Free blogging sites are useful for making money blogging in two ways. One is to provide a backlink to your profitable blog, and the second is to use that link to drive traffic to your money making blog.

Now here's the problem with free blogging links back to your main blog site aren't useful unless your free blog content is related to your money making blog. Without properly targeted traffic visitors are not likely going to visit your make money blogging site.

If you have not done any blogging before, free blog sites are a great way of getting your feet wet, so to speak. And an excellent way of deciding if blogging is something you would like to do. Then if you decide to seriously pursue making money blogging, you'll have a little experience under your belt.

Is making money from home business blogging too good to be true? Can you bring in dollars by just "playing around" on the internet?

Yes, you can indeed make money from home business with blogs (I do every month).

No, it's not just playing around. While it can be a lot of fun, it's also some work to achieve a steady income.

So when is "too good to be true" really that? Let's talk about it a moment.

What's the Hype Factor?

If you've seen a few sales pages, you know what I mean by hype. Ads scream at you, "You can't live without me!" and "Make a million dollars in your underwear!" But is any of it true?

As a general rule, the more hype-y the sales page, the more I want to steer clear of it. While there are exceptions to that rule, think about it. If you could make a million dollars doing one little thing, would you tell everyone and try to sell the idea for $79? I don't think so...

A little hype is OK; that's what sales pages do. But if the claims fall into the "too good to be true" category, they usually are!

Do You Have to Do Anything?

I have to laugh at any claim that you don't have to do anything to watch the money roll in. The money can roll in, but you have to do some up-front work, first.

For example, I have a website that I built 3 years ago, and haven't really touched in a year. It makes me money every month like clockwork. But I had to build the website first, and that took some time. So while now I don't have to do anything but watch the money roll in, it wasn't automatic. I had to put some time and thought into it.

Making Money Blogging

If making money blogging appeals to you; if you like doing some writing and would enjoy building blogs that make money, rest assured. You can do it! And there are two main ways.

First, you can use the search engine of your choice and search for good posts and articles on building blogs that make money. This is a free option (always nice!) but will take a fair amount of time. But if you're not in a hurry and like doing research, it's the way to go.

And while I did use the above option for quite some time, I found that things went a little faster with some help. So yes, I broke down and bought a few products, and have used them with varying degrees of success. If nothing else, they all gave me experience.

The one tool I'd recommend though (if I could only buy one thing) would be to go with WordPress Goldmine. I knew how to make money via websites, but didn't realize it was a whole lot easier doing it with WordPress sites. Mark (a great guy by the way) has laid out a blueprint on how to build a blog that makes money that's easy to follow.

Don't misunderstand me, it's not a free ride; you will have to put some effort into it. But it can bring you a recurring monthly income after you've done the up-front blogging. Which leaves you time to do other things.

Final Answer: Is Making Money Blogging too Good to be True?

My final answer is that making money from home business blogging is not too good to be true, but you can't do it without putting in some effort.

Profitable Blogging Defined

Before we go much farther, I'll define blogging. While the answer might seem obvious (you're reading one now) knowing what blogging is or isn't makes profitable blogging a little easier to pinpoint in a home based business.

History of Blogging -- What is a"Blog"?

Here's a quick history of blogging, so you know where it all began. I'll take the information from Wikipedia, which reads:

"The modern blog evolved from the online diary, where people would keep a running account of their personal lives. Most such writers called themselves diarists, journalists, or journalers. Justin Hall, who began personal blogging in 1994 while a student at Swarthmore College, is generally recognized as one of the earliest bloggers."

So blogging has been around for around 15 years, and was once mostly the diary-type writing. The word "blog" itself is a mash up of two words -- web log. (A mash up is another way of saying a combination of two or more words.)

Define Blogging

Blogs are websites, but of a different kind. Instead of writing HTML pages in a static format, blogs are usually organized in chronological order (most recent first). So it's pretty easy to define blogging in a technical way.

Blog interfaces tend to be simple and easy to use -- if you can write an email, you can likely write a blog to make your home based business go. The software is what does all the magic behind the scenes.

OK, so we see where blogging came from. Now let's take a look at today's blogging.

Types of Blogs

These days, blogs serve all kinds of purposes. The most popular types of blogs are:

Celebrity Blog

Business/Corporate Blog

Fishing Blog

Home Based Business Blog

Personal Blog

New Car Blogs

New Technology Blogs

News Blog

Photo Blog

Sports Blog

Travel Blog

Video Blog

A new type of blog gaining in popularity is the moblog (mobile blogging). And of course, there are those who want to run a small from home based business to make money blogging -- either to drive online sales or increase traffic to brick-and-mortar stores.

The Future of Blogging

So, what is the future of blogging? Where do we go from here? It's kind of hard to tell, but one thing for sure -- blogging is getting more and more popular. Personal blogs will probably still be in the top three kinds of blogs, but profitable blogging from home business is likely to be up there in the top three as well.

To define blogging is to define the way we're increasingly communicating online. More and more, blogs will continue to be created, for a multitude of reasons.

So join the party and start blogging! (And if you need a little help, here's how to start a blog with setting up your blog to get you started fast!)

The basics of blogging cover all the basic essentials, including your writing style, blog category and the content of your blog. Planning your blog can be difficult if you do not know what you want to talk about. It could be extra hard if you do not have the necessary background in blogging. However, knowing what you want to blog about can easily come to you once you start browsing and poking around other blogs. You can pick ideas from those blogs, expound and make them the basis of your blog.

The Blogging Categories

Generally, there are several types of blogs. Nevertheless, there are three popular categories of blogs, such as: the organizational, business and personal blogs.

The first category, the organization, uses the power of blogs to communicate either externally with the public or internally within their organizations. This kind of blog has the purpose of facilitation internal communications amongst employees, colleagues and other organizational personnel. In addition, organizational blogs normally publish information that is of interest by the public. In a certain instance, there are organizational blogs that publish seminar schedules, meetings, and announcements for their clients, customers or members.

The business blogs, on the other hand, are for promoting services or products offered by businesses in order to help increase profits, revenue and interest of potential consumers. These kinds of blogs can look for ways to increase their reputation and authority with vendors, customers and partners. They do this by publishing contents that express expertise and knowledge within a specific market portion, niche or industry.

The personal blogs are those that contain contents that are more of a reflection of bloggers opinions and thoughts. Normally, they are used to publish articles that voice their points of view on several kinds and varieties of events and topics. Bloggers who publish personal contents usually find pleasure in documenting their everyday lives, stream of consciousness and even their hate to specific events through articles that reflects their moods.

The Target Audience

Your target audience and blogging style comes hand in hand. The moment you think of creating your own blog, you must first realize what your target audience is; you must know what they want, need and desire to read about. The blog you create and the contents you publish must provide quality and value to the readers in order to be effective in establishing communication and expanding readership.

More so, the kind of blog you want to create essentially creates its own target audience. For instance, an organizational blog is meant for those who are members or clients of a certain organization. Although the target audience may be limited, there is a good chance for consistency with regards to the dialogue you create with your readers and eventually more people would be interested in your blog.

The mentioned personal blogs are not normally designed for social dialogue with a certain target readership of any category and is rather meant to serve as a collection of your musings. These kinds of blogs are best reserved to your close friends and they are your target audience.

If you identify your target audience successfully, your messages that you want everyone to know about will be effectively targeted. Some of the greatest joys of blogging come from the use of your enthusiasm in publishing signification information for a community where there is a free exchange of opinions between the readers and you.

Lastly, you got to check out the blogging method that bring in income every month. I start generate three hundreds dollars for the 1st week following the methods, not easy though, but it is still growing every month.

Make Money Blogging ' Building Your Niche Audience And Getting The Basics In Place

Blogging has become the buzzword of the first decade of the 21st century. Ten years ago virtually nobody had a blog. Today your social standing is not quite what it should be if you don't have a blog. The reasons for starting a blog are many, but if making money is one of your reasons, let's talk about how to make money blogging!

The first thing you have to remember is to keep your blog about a niche subject. If you live in a far-off exotic place like La Paz, Bolivia, you could simply write about daily life in the highest capital in the world. If you live in New York, you will have to narrow down things a little bit. You could write a very interesting blog about daily life in the Bronx for example.

The number of niche subjects are virtually unlimited. Which one you choose to write about will to a large extent be determined by your life experience and interests. If you are a seventy year old ju-jitsu wrestler, many people will probably be interested in how you do it. If you are known for your sharp wit, you could for example write a political blog and tear your local politicians apart.

The point we are attempting to get across here is that you should first concentrate on giving your visitors something of value before attempting to make money from them. Once they trust you as a source of information on the subject of choice, they will return time after time and this is when you can start to monetize your blog.

Only after that should you start thinking about ways to monetize your blog. The first option that comes to mind is an affiliate program. In the case of your blog about daily life in La Paz, Bolivia, find a company that will pay you a commission for selling their products online. Those things should preferably be related to the subject of your blog, which in the case of La Paz could well be the beautiful Lama wool cardigans produced there. There are numerous affiliate programs available online.

A second possibility and one chosen by many bloggers, is to display advertisements on your blog and get paid every time someone clicks on one of those ads. There are a number of companies that offer this option. They find the advertisers ' all you've got to do is draw the visitors to your blog and then get a share of the advertising revenue.

Whichever route you choose to go, never concentrate on how to make money blogging. A well-written blog that appeals to a niche group of readers will grow over time and get more and more visitors. And with the visitors the money will come, whether it be from affiliate sales or from advertising.

Learn more about how you can start to make money online today! When you start to make money blogging, you are going to find that it is a fast and easy way to make money doing something you are going to love!

There are several Benefits of Blogging For Small Business. Blogging stands for web log. It is similar to a website in that you can add content, text information. But it is not like a website in that it does not have the functionality of a website. But if you are not a web technician type of person then a blog has the advantage that it takes little computer skill to build one and to maintain it.

There are several free blog software available. Some have some features others do not. But the biggest benefit of the free blog software is that they are free. You cannot beat that. With a blog you can build a community of followers when you continue to provide valuable content to your readers.

If you are an expert in your field, let us say your business, then you can give your readers information they might not be able to find anywhere else. This builds a loyal following because they know when they come to your blog you will share information they can use. Are you familiar with search engine ranking?

If you are not familiar with search engine ranking this refers to how high your site is listed on the search engine results pages. You want to appear on the first page of the search for a particular key word related to your online business. The great advantage with blogs is that since they are updated frequently search engines rank them high on their results pages.

The good thing about blogs is that the search engines love them. Blogs are ranked high on the search engines because they are usually updated with fresh content. Search engines reward sites that have new content related to a specific keyword or phrase. Your job is to make sure you post if not everyday with new information related to your website then at least three to five days per week.

If your budget for advertising is limited then a blog is a great way to invest your time. It will cost you only your time and no money to build your online presence for your business. You will not even have to pay for hosting. And you will be able to do it all yourself and not hire someone to do this for you.

This means you will not have to pay someone to build your website. If you know from your own experience that you have visited websites and you notice that the content has not changed in weeks or maybe in months. So you choose to stop visiting the website.

Because a blog is changing every day or almost every day people will keep visiting to see what is new. Also, most blogs have an RSS feature this means that people visiting your blog can sign up and get a message letting them know you have updated your blog with new content. Overall a blog is a great way to promote your small business online.

HostGator is the cheapest web host. HostGator coupons available at http://hostgatorcouponandreview.com/hostgator-coupon.html.

by Brian Konradt

Blogging (short for "web logging"), born from the Internet age, is one of the newer venues for freelance writing. The Internet has generated a lot of news about the financial possibilities open to bloggers: an audience of potentially millions -- along with possible corporate sponsorship, a byline, and infinite creative control -- captures the imagination of many prospective bloggers, and makes blogging seem like an infinitely desirable, lucrative field.

The truth is it is much more difficult to become a successful freelance blogger. A good knowledge of marketing, web design, and being consistent are skills you need to make a living (or a comfortable extra income) from this new form of media.

The reason for this is the low barrier of entry. Anyone with access to web space can start a blog. Sites like Blogger, Livejournal and even MySpace offer free web space to anyone willing to sign up. This has resulted in millions of blogs in existence today, many of them literate, many of them wildly popular, and nearly all of them free to read and browse.

That variety of free content makes it difficult to charge for access to your writing, no matter how good it is. You could be the greatest expert on foreign policy or nutrition known to man, and few people would be willing to pay $5 -- or $1, or one cent -- to read a blog post by you, the expert, when there are thousands of semi-qualified (but bright and engaging) writers giving away similar material.

So your main sources of revenue are going to come from advertising and from whatever paid content you can fit into the site. Luckily, web advertising is becoming less dicey than it was a year ago.

Google's "AdSense" program is a good baseline for a page, providing targeted advertising based on your content and paying you, directly, per click-through (although the pay rate per click is low.) You can supplement that amount with other forms of web advertising, from the comparatively unobtrusive banner to pop-up animations that "float over" the text.

This brings us to the "double-edged sword" problem in web advertising. The most effective advertising is obtrusive advertising; that is, advertising that blocks valuable content until the user clicks on it either to make it disappear or to take you to a different website.

However, obtrusive advertising also irritates your readers, which can lead to a lower reputation for your blog overall. On the Internet, reputation is the single best determinant of your web traffic. Using obtrusive advertising can significantly lower your traffic and make your blog that much less attractive to potential advertisers.

So you'll need to find a happy medium between heavy advertising (and light traffic) and little to no advertising (and high traffic, but little revenue.) Luckily, the instant responsiveness of the Internet, along with the commenting features available on nearly all blogging software, make it easy to ask your readers about exactly what level of advertising they'd be willing to accept. Reader connectivity is one of the most important features of any good blog: not only does it allow you to fine-tune your blog over time, eliminating features that readers find irritating or off-putting, but it also allows you to develop personal connections with your readers, the kind of connections that build loyal audiences.

There are other ways to make money by blogging, such as the following:

1) It's possible to sidestep advertising altogether by making some of your content unavailable, except to subscribers. For example, you might only keep your most recent five or six blog entries unlocked, and require a monthly subscription fee to read the rest of the archives;

2) Or you might keep your current posts and your entire regular archives active, but produce some longer or specialized entries or other content and charge a set fee for these;

3) You could even compile some of your best entries into a physical book, along with some new content, and offer it for sale. Even if all the entries are available online, you'd be surprised how many people are willing to pay to have something they can hold in their hands;

4) Additionally, you could go the Salon.com route -- make all of your archives available to anyone willing to watch a short full-screen advertisement -- or you could rely on readers' willingness to support content that they find worthwhile by asking for donations outright.

Many prominent blogs and online content providers have done this and found themselves able to make rent and pay all of their bills every month on donations alone.

No matter how much advertising or subscription services your blog has, it's all worthless if people don't want to read you in the first place. And there are three simple rules to make your blog popular:

1) Write on something you care about 2) Write consistently and thoughtfully on a regular schedule (daily is best) 3) Read and comment on other blogs

People read blogs because they provide a source of information and analysis on topics that traditional media sources only cover sketchily and hastily, or don't cover at all. Don't try to figure out an ideal money-making blog topic and proceed from there. People care about blogs because blogs are about personal, in-depth viewpoints and thoughts.

If you can provide those to your audience regularly, and you can set up a minimally-intrusive but still worthwhile revenue system through advertising or subscriptions, there's no reason why you can't become a successful blogger.
