(Actually, knowing Orlando, this can be narrowed even more...but you might see it easier in the next example.)

The Car Niche

So you've got an idea of what a niche is -- let's apply it to cars, which are as you might guess, way too broad.  So let's think about a manufacturer:  Chevrolet for this example.

Still too broad -- Chevrolet has a lot of models, spanning a lot of years.  So let's pick a model -- the Chevrolet Bel Air.

Whoops, still too broad, so let's focus on a specific year -- the 1957 Chevy Bel Air.  Now we're getting warmer.  And if we really want to niche it down more, we'd talk about just the engine parts for the 1957 Chevy Bel Air.  It's a topic that doesn't have a huge search, but on the other hand, the traffic you do get is laser-targeted.

Traffic for an Online Niche

You may be saying to yourself, "Yeah, the traffic is really targeted, but there's so little!"  Let's think about that a second.

An online niche is a funny thing.  You start getting small amounts of traffic for your keywords (engine parts for the 1957 Chevy Bel Air), and you build the site up.  One day you notice a traffic increase and you see you're getting traffic for the keywords "1957 Chevy Bel Air".  Then maybe "Bel Air".  See where I'm going?

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic!

Well, make that targeted traffic, which is what raises the value of a blog.  Whether you are building a blog to build your business or have the idea of selling it, targeted traffic is the only way to really make money blogging.

But what the heck is targeted traffic?  In general, it's traffic that arrives at your site via search engines, and can also be extended to include traffic arriving from articles you've written.

As nice as it is, targeted traffic isn't about things like a Digg front page posting that drives enormous amounts for a day or two.  That's fleeting and not part of the traffic flow you want.

What about other social networks, like Twitter and StumbleUpon?  If you're getting some steady traffic from them and they view more than 1 page, I'd consider that targeted.  What I would not consider targeted is a huge spike from either one -- unless you got repeat traffic because if it.  (Example:  if a lot of Stumbler’s bookmarked you and came back.)

Ultimately its monetary value lies in the amount and consistency of targeted traffic, along with the focus ("niche") you've selected.  For example, a Google 1st page blog on goldfish (even if there is a lot of targeted traffic) won't have the same monetary value as a high traffic blog about affiliate programs.  Different niches, different monetization possibilities.

The only exception to the above would be a blog that has a highly sought-after domain name (example, florida.com).  Even if the blog had virtually no traffic, the value is in the name itself.  But these days, it's really hard to come across those kinds of names.

So what's your blog worth?  Nothing until you build it up, unless you've got a desirable domain name.  But with time, your blog can bring you profits, whether through affiliate sales, brick-and-mortar sales or selling the blog itself!

The first reason that you will want to do this is because you can see an increase in the number of back links to your spot on the web. You might not realize it, but back links are one of the keys to get your rank increased on the results pages. By having more of these your spot on the web will be seen as more popular to the engines and just like in school the popular guy or girl got all the attention.

The second benefit is that depending on the website you can achieve a different level of expertise. By achieving this level of expertise you will be able to generate a level of trust in your customers. Which could end up leading to more sales for you.

The third benefit is that it is inexpensive to do this form of marketing. Marketing and ad campaigns can be costly. However, if you consider that you are going to be able to use this by using your own keyboard and typing out articles you can see that you are not going to have any cost associated with this.

The fourth reason is that you will be able to provide yourself with an education. Being able to learn something new everyday will mean that you are going to have a higher level of education to provide for your children as they grow up. By doing this you will be able to answer more questions that people have as well improving your standing in social circles.
